My favorite trail runner

I’ve been wearing the Altra Olympus since the 4, and I’m now on my 2nd pair of this colorway of the 5. I love purple, I love these sneakers. When Altra ever stops making these, I will go into mourning. My first pair soon after the release of the 5 had a weird issue with the center of the tread separating from the rest of the sole after only a few dozen miles of wear, but I didn’t care and continued to wear them. I still wear them hiking, that piece of tread is still hanging on for dear life. I haven’t bothered to do anything about it, and they’re still going strong. As for my 2nd pair (bought much more recently after realizing I desperately needed another pair of them to wear at work if I didn’t want to hate myself and my feet at the end of every shift), they haven’t had that problem at all despite probably a thousand of miles of cumulative wear. These are a comfortable, supportive, low-drop shoe with a wide toe box and plenty of adjustability. I love where the heel locks cinch on my ankle, and I wear these both at work on my feet in a big cement box for 8 hour shifts) and for hiking, which is why I currently have 2 pairs.I do notice that the ankle cushioning above the heel seems to wear out and deteriorate much more rapidly than the rest of the shoe, but I also shove my feet into my shoes like a degenerate child and I don’t think that wear and tear is Altra’s fault.

My feet don't hurt now!

Update: still old but not as fat now and I still love these shoes. Now I am able to hike about 5 miles. This type of shoe has been key for my feet. Not to run, just a great pair of supportive shoes for day hiking or roads. The wide base is nice & grippy with its vibram sole. I buy different insoles since the ones that come with the shoes are worthless. I have extra pairs in the closet for spares as they do eventually break down. But honestly, these are my main go to shoes for everything. I just wish the company would quit 'upgrading' the shoes and narrowing them in newer versions!Original review: Love these shoes. I am NOT a runner, just a fat old grandma who loves to walk. These are the only shoes that stop my plantar fasciatis from hurting. I can walk my 30 minutes easily. The shoes fit my wide duck feet very well, no squished toes, great traction in on & off trails. The design labels peeled off the first shoes but I didn't care as I'm not a fashion person. I'm going to buy another pair for backup.

Perfect Phlebotomy shoes

I adore Altra's comfort and their design that is actually designed for the human foot, so I was extremely worried when the manager at my phlebotomy job told me I had to get different shoes because the Altras I was wearing were not wipeable. I ordered these unsure if they were truly wipeable or comparable to the comfort of wearing Torins, and was pleasantly surprised to find they satisfy both of these needs. If you wear any other tennis shoes than Altras, you are actively choosing a worse option. I have worn these for a year at my job with orthotic inserts, and I never have to worry about foot pain despite constantly walking around during the entire shift. Another senior phlebotomist complained about the shoe brand she had been relying on for comfort becoming painful and I strongly recommended Altra to her. She bought them and has told me how much better and awesome they are.Do yourself a favor, if you need shoes that are wipeable or have water protection, get these. Even just for daily walking.

Quality has gone WAY down

Well I've been an Altra shoe wear for many many years. I agree they don't last as long as some other shoes. However lightweight, quick drying fast on your feet shoes, to be expected a little bit. However the new Olympus model, whatever this material they're using is absolute junk. I went on one hundred and fifty mile backpacking trip and the insides of my shoes are completely falling apart. Both the logos on the outsides are falling apart. The toe lip is coming off. You can see the tread looks new but the shoe itself is falling apart. 10 days of walking junk. I did not get them wet it was nice weather the whole time. I did not have to do any water crossings with these shoes so it wasn't that they got wet dried wet dried etc that can break down material. They legit fell apart. You can tell the material is cheaper than old models get the shoe is still $150. I will wait and hope that they change the material again I'm very mad because I've purchased three pairs of these shoes, they are very comfy on my feet. However I'm pretty sure the other two are going to fall apart in a week. Horrible. Customer service says normal wear and tear. Really Not even two weeks and this is considered normal wear and tear where the complete inside falls out? Not even horrible

So far my favorite shoe!

The Altra Olympus 5 running shoes are a game changer! They were comfortable straight out of the box, with no need for a break-in period. The support is fantastic, providing just the right amount of cushioning for long runs and hikes. I have wide feet, and finding shoes that fit well can be a challenge, but these fit perfectly with plenty of room in the toe box. The grip on various terrains is excellent too. If you need a supportive, comfortable shoe, especially for wide feet, I highly recommend the Altra Olympus 5!

Ouch! Tongue is made of razors

Who would design the top of the tongue to be made of sharp plastic?!? It’s cutting into my foot! I tried to wear high socks (which I had to purchase as I had all low socks so I can run with shorts without looking like a gym student from 1950 but it still cuts. I absolutely love altras toe box and the cushioning but this “new” tongue design is a complete fail! Why do this???? Someone needs to be fired from the design team. Totally useless and terrible design. To be clear- the rest of the shoe is amazing. I am going to try gluing a cushion on the tongue to make it work.
