Very comfortable hiking boot

I've worn these boots hiking in the mountains during vacations a couple of years in a row. I love them. The wide toe box is great, and the boots are very comfortable. I was able to hike in these boots right off the bat with no break-in period needed. I've walked through streams in them a few times, and they held up great, keeping my feet completely dry. Since I don't live in a place where I wear these boots every day, I feel like they will last several years for me. So far, they've held up great and they are by far the most comfortable hiking boots I've ever worn. The added bonus is they look great, too!

Best hiking boots EVER

It’s like hiking in pillows! My feet, knees, hips, and back all feel so much better when I hike now because of these boots! The extra space in the toe box really feels wonderful to me, and the lugs on the bottom make the shoe grip exceptionally well. There’s a loop on the back of the shoe is there so that you’re able to attach a gaiter so that no debris gets in your boot while you hike. I do have issues with my arch, and this boot doesn’t have extra arch support, but there’s plenty of space to add an arch support insert. My only critique is that I wish they had made this one in some prettier colors, but of course, that is such a very minor thing in comparison to everything else. The “6” version does have better colors, but it definitely wasn’t worth $100 more to me to get a color I like. I would say that the dust from hiking blends in nicely with this color, so there’s that. :-)

Great shoe with severe quality control issues

This is my 6th pair of Altras: they are usually perfect and I love the brand and have gotten my friends hooked on them too.I have run the lugs completely off 2 pairs of the Lone Peak style and bought these to get a stiffer pair more suitable for ankle support, big rocks, and serious hiking. The issues with the seams noted by other customers are indeed so severe that wearing this shoe will result in bleeding ankles. The seams on the inside of the ankle cuff are so stiff they will chafe your skin off and this appears to be due to the use of fabric glue to stablize this portion of the lining for sewing it. There is also a smear of dried fabric glue on the interior lining of one of the shoes which confirmed my suspicions. Additionally, Altra is known for a wide toe box to accomodate a full foot flex, but the right shoe was so narrow I could barely get my foot in it and the left shoe was standard Altra shape/width. This model is also the first pair I've had that have not been exactly true to brand sizing standards: it runs about a quarter size shorter. Absolutely unwearable and that's a pity because the orange color is so fantastic. Returning them.I ordered a second pair a half size up to see if it was a sporadic issue and the next pair was just fine (and it fits fine with thick wool hiking socks). The thicker sole and stiff construction do a fantastic job at stabilizing the ankle and taking the impact on big, pointy rocks and the grippy lugs are better than the competitors, as usual. I just wish there hadn't been this much hassle to get a wearable pair.

Very comfortable

These are waterproof and rugged! I wear them hiking miles as well as working on my muddy farm fixing fence etc. I spray them off and they clean up great! The tread is awesome. I normally wear a 7, I did get and like the 7.5 in these for heavy socks

Shoes caused a horrible fall on flat surface at the airport

The back of each shoe has a two loops (one on each side) that hold a loop that goes across the back to tether your boots to a backpack or hang to dry. the challenge is that the hooks on the side of the boots catch inside the loops and cause you to. unexpectedly completely trip when one shoe gets caught made stride. I bruised both hands falling hard on to the hard surface at seatac and then had to cut the loops off ASAP. In addition one of the seams hits the front of the ankle in the soft spot (both sides) that then creates a really painful stride when doing down hill alot (which I did o the Matterhorn trails). So suffice it to say that while I loved the width and comfort and toe box of these shoes, the ankle seam is horrible and the strapping in the back is not well thought out.

Not for me

This brand was recommended by my podiatrist for the wide, deep toe box. That part of the boot was great, as was the cushion sole. But, the deal breakers were the tongue, overall height, and the laces. The boot cuff is a soft padded material but there is a seam on it that rubbed right across my ankle bone. The boot was very difficult to get on…it has to be unlaced about halfway before there’s room to slide your foot inside. The tongue is sewn onto the sides of the boot about halfway up. That wouldn’t be a big problem except the seam where it is sewn to the boot rubs the foot. The laces were so short they could barely be tied. I’m hesitant to try another pair from this brand because they missed the mark on how a hiking boot should fit and feel.

Cute and comfy

Wore new out the box on a 17-mile hike up half dome. No pain, blisters, or complaints. The size was just right, lots of toe box space, were not heavy on the feet, water resistant, and the traction was great on the granite.
