Great boot, but do your homework
I love these boots, they're the most comfortable footwear I own. I had to return the first pair, due to a problem with the heel and size. Please, if you don't want to deal with returns, check the Ariat website for exact boot sizes. They have a great size chart so you can choose the correct boot size. The big thing is you actually need to measure the length of your foot and pick the size that corresponds to that inches or cm you measured. You'd do the same thing to get fitted at a store for boots, but since you're buying online you have to do it at home for yourself. Do not just look at the tag on your sneakers and choose a size, because it might actually work out. I can wear up to a 10 in some brands, but in these boots I'm in a 9. Please save yourself some hassle and take the time to do a little research before you buy.As for quality, I had no problem with the pair I have. Ariat makes a great boot, and they are super comfortable. I wore these boots for 30 hours straight (it was a road trip that turned into a bigger event than planned), and had no problems. My feet didn't hurt, didn't get any cramps. Nothing. But I've also worn boots with a similar sized heel. If you're not used to a heel, maybe you should try something cheaper and see if the height and style is something you can work with. There's a review posted here rating these boots 1 star. Sorry, the person wasn't used to actual boots. Yes, the boots will be stiff right out of the box. If you're looking for soft, find a slouch boot (check Dingo for a good selection). These boots are made to be stiffer and stand up. And the cracking is typical of a leather boot that's been sitting in a box since it left the factory. And they're going to be tight at some points, and should be in the area in front of your ankle, around the top of the foot but not the ball of the foot...confusing but there's some good tutorials online on how to fit boots if you are a newbie buying a first pair. And the boots are distressed leather, made to look worn. It's a dye and processing technique, doesn't mean the boot is of low quality. In fact most boots are like that now. Some good leather care is all you need to keep them looking great.Overall, I could not ask for a better boot than the Ariat Legend. They have taken a beating and remain so very comfortable. They fit like they're supposed to, and are plenty wide in the calf.

Wonderful Boots!
I don't usually write reviews, but I am so happy with these boots that I had to. They seem really well made, have good durable outsoles and really comfortable insoles. I would say they are true to size or maybe towards the lower end of normal size. I usually wear a 5.5 to 6 in closed shoes and the 5.5 fits perfectly. They are a little tight around the top of the foot but I am confident that they will stretch a little with more wear. The leather is beautiful. I got the distressed brown color and I would definitely recommend it. It looks much better than in the picture. I also have a hard time with finding boots that have a big enough calf for me since I am short and have small feet, the larger part of my calf is down lower and a lot of boots are too small in the calf because of that. Luckily these ones are the perfect size and also fit right in the foot part. So if you have larger calves, this would be a good boot to try. I feel like these boots will last a really long time and are well worth the money. I hope this review helps someone figure out if this is the right boot for them.

Wide calf boot (Ariat Women's Legend)
They should call this a wide calf boot. I love the style very much and enjoy it, but my legs look kind of funny in them. The top is very wide and when walking it looks like my leg is the inside of a bell. However, the shoe is amazing for comfort. After all if someone is wearing boots they need it to be comfortable. I bought it in wide shoe size and it was true to size (probably a little more room than expected around the foot, but with thick boot socks it will be very good). Many boots rub the top of my foot and that didn't happen at all. I am so excited for my first pair of boots. I tried on 30 in the store and didn't find one that wasn't rubbing on some part of my foot. This shoe is amazing, just wish the top didn't get wider at the top.

LOVE these boots
OK - these are now my 3rd pair of Ariat boots. I now have a 10yr old pair, a 5 year old pair and now a new pair. True to fit. Good width. Excellent quality. I love these boots! I ride a motorcycle and can the walk around a rally or event all day - and my feet are don't get achy or hurt. My Ariat boots are probably the most comfortable shoes I own. I wear them several times a week. I prefer the square toe - which is stylish and doesn't squish the feet. (My oldest pair are pointed toe boots and not quite as comfortable - but still darn good!) The leather is good quality, strong but not stiff. The soles and heels last and don't run down. I tell everyone who asks (and some that don't) if you want a good quality pair of boots that look good and feel good - get a pair of Ariat boots! You can find cheaper boots - but for me - you can't find more comfortable boots.
