Perfect Shoe for Narrow Feet
Amazing quality and fit! I purchased these Cole Haan Men's Howland Penny Loafers in Black 12M for my husband who has a narrow foot. These shoes fit perfectly and true to size in length for a 12M. This is the second pair of Cole Haan's I've purchased for him and are definitely best for those with narrow feet. If you have a wide foot, these are not going to be the shoe for you. Some reviewers commented on a smaller toe space but my husband found the fit comfortable right out of the box. He said they feel like a moccasin and these shoes will only become more comfortable in time with wearing. These were comfortable for him with and without socks. The leather and stitching is a high quality. The first Cole Haan shoes (very similar to these) I purchased for my husband lasted well over 3 years. Well worth the money for the quality. If you have a narrow or slightly narrow foot, these shoes are worth the money and fit true to size in length. The 12M fits more like a 12 narrow. My husband is extremely pleased and wears these without socks on the weekends but can wear them to work as well for causal Fridays at the office. I'm very pleased with this purchase and will be buying these same shoes again in a different color!

A great looking shoe that accommodates a wide range of settings, but not of motions.
I have somewhat high arches and a foot width that must be middle of the road. Usually that means I don't need special accommodation in my footwear. If that doesn't sound like you your mileage may vary significantly from mine. These shoes come feeling a bit narrow but they widen out quickly as they break in. Give them time. After a few days of breaking them in I was very happy wearing these all day long. If your feet aren't on the wide end of the spectrum I don't think you should be deterred by reports of narrowness. From the point of view of someone who stuck it out with this shoe and is glad to have done so, there's really only one draw back to the shoe: as loafers with a very flexible sole they aren't very supportive shoes. The supple leather, flexible sole, and low profile of the shoe all combine to allow a lot of lateral motion, especially as the leather stretches out over time. However, all those things also make it a very classy looking shoe that feels very nice on the foot. They are quite soft on the foot, and style-wise they occupy a very useful place in between absolute casual and truly dressed up -- meaning they're as good for a night out as they are for work. If you're not planning on doing anything athletic these are a great choice with a lot of stylistic range and comfort.

Beautiful Shoe but No Success with Fit
I really, really wanted to be able to wear these shoes. The leather is high quality and beautiful. The tan (not to be confused with the "saddle tan" which is slightly darker) has a beautiful reddish glow. The whole shoe feels well made. And they were $50 off so I wanted them to fit even more.Alas, it was not to be. I'm a solid 6.5 in length and a borderline D / E in width (usually D in sneakers and E in dress shoes). I read in the reviews that these shoes run narrow so I started with a 6.5 E (aka 6.5 "W"). The 6.5 E was perfect in length and ok in width but, bizarrely, the "height" of the toebox wasn't high enough. My foot was squeezed up against the uppers. I could barely believe it but when I searched the reviews I found another reviewer who had the exact same experience... the shoes were too "thin" (not narrow) for me.I tried a 7 D (aka 7 "M") next. It was pure torture. Even at half a size too long the width was way too narrow. These shoes *really* run narrow.Last I tried the 7 E. They were out 7 Es in "tan" so I got these in "saddle tan" which was subtly darker and not quite as nice to me. I think I got an "off" pair. The right foot fit perfect but the left foot (even though it was stamped "7 W" inside) was way too narrow - it felt like the 7 Ds.I could have tried another pair of 7 Es but at this point I've given up. I've returned all 3 pairs (Amazon's return process has been excellent as always) and I plan to move up market to the Allan Edmonds "Ventura Hwy". They cost twice as much but it's hard to get a good fit on men's loafers when you have small, wide feet - and honestly, what's the point of a pair of loafers that aren't comfortable? So if your feet are narrow and "thin" I highly recommend this shoe - especially if you can get them on sale for $100. The tan is just beautiful. Goes perfect with blue denim. If you have wide / "thick" feet then you might want to give the wides a try but be prepared to return. And if you're a 6.5 E and you've found the perfect comfortable loafer then please leave me a comment and let me know what it is! ;-D
