They fit well
TLDR: Very nice look and generally good quality. The US size 8 is really a Euro 39 (so more like an 8.5); good amount of roominess in the forefoot area. The insoles are completely flat but a good springy feel; just not supportive enough for me (might work for orthotics wearers). The front section creased inward for me when my foot bends, and to me the sole seems overly bendable right at the ball of the foot. Ended up returning.Full review:I bought these shoes because I am planning ahead to have shoes to a trip to Ireland in the spring, and I wanted shoes that would keep my feet dry, resist slipping, and be suitable for touring urban sites, historic sites, and a couple national parks (though no serious hiking). I also wanted them to be lightweight, laced, and NOT a gaudy color.I got the grey ones, size 8. Normally priced $90, I got them on sale for about $65. I really wanted them to work for me, because that's a GREAT deal on WATERPROOF shoes that met my criteria. Some of the many plusses are that they are a nice neutral color and are leather. (Kudos to Columbia for providing a waterproof shoe that looks pretty much like a normal, nice, shoe.) They aren't obnoxiously athletic-looking, and you could make them look more like street shoes by just replacing the striped laces with plain black laces. They are a nice grey color (no brown tone, more a pure grey), the leather surface is subtly sueded and nice, and the soles look like you would not have slipping issues with them. Also, the laces seem sturdy, and they lace really far up.The insoles are a nice springy type that feel good to walk on, but they are completely flat. My feet are not very arched either, but these shoes are FLAT. If you have custom orthotics (I don't, but my husband does, so I know a little about how that works), these might work perfectly for you. But for me these seemed vaguely unsupportive due to their flatness, despite the springy-ness of the insoles. The US 8 size is actually really a Euro 39. I know this not just because the box says Euro 39 (as well as US 8 and UK 6), but because I am a pretty reliable size 8, occasionally an 8.5 depending on brand. These shoes fit like 8.5-9 on me. With medium-weight hiking socks they were still a little long on me, but they generally fit the shape of my foot OK, which tends to be a bit wide across the ball of my foot and a bit narrow though the heel. I had a nice amount of room in the forward part of the shoe that wasn't due to extra length, which is a plus.Besides the flat insole, the other negative issue I had was that when I walked, the shoe would crease inward near the top of my foot. I associate this with shoes that are too big, although it might possibly be the construction style of the front of the shoe. Putting on thicker socks helped a bit but did not eliminate the issue. I also felt like the shoe is overly bendable in the forefoot area, which perhaps contributed to this issue. If you look at the tread pattern, it seems that even that is set to make it more bendable at the ball of the foot. I think these shoes would actually be more supportive if they were less flexible in that area. I will try to attach a photo showing the inward creasing issue I had.I decided to return these. The shoes I believe I will be replacing them with (Dansko Paisley waterproof shoes size 39) are costing me ~$100 more than my great sale price, ughh. But, I was able to try them on in person from a local shop before buying (same price as what I could get them for on Amazon), and they feel much more supportive, with no creasing inward issues. Despite how much I like a great deal, I want my footwear to be optimal for this trip. (Time will tell as I wear them around the house - my big trips are very rare, so I get the important stuff way in advance and make sure it works for me.) Plus, well-fitting shoes are generally a good investment.Recommendations: If you are someone who is familiar with buying separate specialized insoles, or have your own orthotics, or like flat insoles, these shoes might work really well for you. If you tend to have wide feet, these will probably not work for you. If you are a true size 8, you might want to get the 7.5 and the 8 to try both. These are an exceptional value if you can get them on sale.4 stars because the sole seems overly flexible and the insoles are so flat. The quality seems generally good, though.
I have been through several pairs of shoes due to my let foot feeling like it's in a vice grip. These are the first pair of shoes I have worn that have not caused that foot pain, either walking or at rest. (others I have to break in and even at that, it can still sometimes hurt my feet at times) And I am a very active person. I was worried when I first put these on as the back heel part was incredibly tight and to me, that is always an indicator that is the first section that will hurt my heel. Shockingly, after 2 days of wear, it has been a non issue.I noticed the toe box in these are slightly wider. Which I am certain is the main reason why I am not feeling the typical pain I would get.I have worn these for 2 days. Running several errands. I'm very eager to try these for mowing the lawn, as I have a steep hill to mow and my other shoes can sometimes slip while walking on the hill. These have good traction on the soles, that I can not wait to try come winter, as they will have the traction needed.I've noticed my feet don't get fatigue as quickly with these as they do with other shoes and I feel like these are giving me feet new life to really walk around. My only complaint is the shoe lace is rather short.Update 8/22/2025I wore these doing while cleaning the kitchen. I didn't need to feel like I needed to sit and take a break. I even did some light yard work. I haven't been able to try these for walking, but that's coming up real soon.
These are very comfortable hiking shoes that look nice enough to wear them even with dress casual slacks. My feet are very wide, but these actually fit me well. The quality is excellent, and I'm so impressed that they are actually waterproof! I really like the grey color as well as just everything about this shoe! Highly recommend!
I’ve been using Columbia footwear for years, and it always delivers. I already have a hiking boot from Columbia in a khaki color that I absolutely love, super sturdy, comfortable, and still going strong after many uses. So when I decided to get a second pair in the Graphite/Tea Light color, I had full confidence in the brand. This Newton Nimble Leather Hiking Shoe is just as impressive. The leather is soft but durable, and the grip on the sole gives excellent traction even on rocky or slippery trails. It’s supportive without being bulky, and feels great right out of the box, no break-in needed.Columbia is a brand I truly trust for outdoor gear. Their shoes are reliable, well made, and always comfortable. If you’re looking for something versatile for hiking and everyday wear, this is a fantastic pick. Highly recommend!
This is a good pair of hiking shoes. They’re very lightweight and quite water resistant, have a heavily padded collar and heel and are well made. They’ve got rugged soles with great traction, even in wet environments, and provide good support and stability. They’re adjustable enough to fit even my wide feet with narrow heels. I find them more comfortable to wear tied at the next to last notch (see the next to last pic), the thickly padded tongue rubs the front of my ankle with them laced all the way up. I also found the shoestrings to be a bit short if laced all the way up. There’s not a lot of arch support in the insoles, but they are nicely padded and feel springy, which helps relieve foot fatigue on longish hikes. All in all, a solid 4 star pair of hiking shoes.
