Excellent duty
This is an excellent 8 inch for patrol. Tough and comfortable. Stays clean with a simple brush off. Very comfortable for long hours on feet, concrete. Excellent traction in grass and dirt. The only thing I’ll mention is the side zip. The upper shank is more narrow than most zips but extremely comfortable. I’ve found I have to untie to remove each day. Not a problem if you like to make sure your boot is right everyday. I did observe some weird rubbing in the topside toe box originally if the boots weren’t laced firm. This went away. No break in period needed for this boot. I will say the shorter version seemed more padded and bulkier, to include toe box. I personally like both but the 8 inch provides more support and protection.

Great boots, breathable and warm
Love the Merrel tactical boots, they hold up well, have good traction, aren’t heavy, fit true to size, and I got a great deal. This is the only brand I’ll wear at work as an EMT, all other boots I’ve tried give me blisters on the backs of my heels, except these. They also double as my backup hiking boots.

I ordered extra wide because I have super wide feet...well, these are the first boot Ive had that actually gave my toes room to wiggle.I wear them 12+ hours. I normally buy 13D in 5.11 and these fit way looser than those. Next time ill get a 12 1/2Ive had a thread come out of the stitching on the sleft side but thats because my boot constantly rubs the floorboard of my patrol unit there.Very comfortable...i work in rural areas. Couldnt tell you how these would be inside, like in a prison, ive had good traction on wet concrete on the street but prison concrete is different, so..idk.I use tire wet to clean these and stay within policy.Our Swat unit issues these

These are great boots!
Bought them for my son who works outside as a security guard and is on his feet for most of the day. After 2 days, he is still raving about how good they are, especially since we have had so much rain. His feet are staying nice and dry. He thanked me for them yesterday a second time, so he must really like them! (I have never been let down by Merrell boots and have worn them for many years. So worth the extra money over less expensive brands.)

Great as a motorcycle boot
I ordered the 13W size in these boots and they were spot on.Super comfortable right out of the box. I love the zipper feature; allowing me to set the laces once and then just use the zipper for quick in and out of the boots!I took these out of the box and then rode with them on my motorcycle for a 2 day 500 mile trip through some hilly areas with many stops and starts through PA. I hit a fair amount of heavy rain on the ride and these boots kept my feet dry. They are pretty grippy on wet pavement for stopping.They were also very comfortable for hiking around at some of the destinations.While these don't offer full reinforcement and ankle protection like a true motorcycle specific boot they provided all I needed especially because most Motorcycle boots don't come in WIDE.I would highly recommend these boots (and already have recommended them to riding friends).

Fraying in week one.
Owned for 18 months now.Within two weeks of wearing these for security duties twice a week the toe area threads began to fray. The boot is comfortable and supportive. After hiking in them they have proven to be durable. The toe area threads are continuing to fray but the rest of it is holding up well.The tab to hold the side zipper in place is too high to do anything.I wouldn't spend this amount of money again on a boot that is fraying and may soon have holes in the top toe area.
