Work well with and without a cane.
I bought a pair of these exact same shoes when on vacation in New Hampshire. Loved the sneaker. I have a hard time calling them "Athletic Shoe" or "Running Shoe", because I'm not athletic and I'm not going running. I'm in my seventies and just got a whole knee replacement(should've done it years ago). The original pair were/are very comfortable, and they worked well with my cane. Now I don't need the cane anymore and the sneakers still work great. They don't seem to miss the cane either. As for the new shoes, they are now my dress shoes here in Arizona. They fit as well as my original pair, but they don't have all the character lines or stains yet. So, if you need a pair of comfortable "sneakers", these New Balance Men's M990GL4 Running Shoes by New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc are highly recommended by this Arizona retiree.

Order wider than you expect!
These shoes are awesome but run really narrow. Order the next width up from what you normally wear. I normally wear a size 11 D width in every single shoe and boot I have ever purchased and had to step it up to a size 11 2E width with New Balance. The guy at the New Balance store even said I should wear a D width after measuring my foot with his contraption but told me I need a 2E width in their shoes. Too many times you hear that New Balance shoes are smaller or narrower than all the other brands. Many reviewers say they should be alright once broken in. Expensive, top end running shoes should not require to be broken in. They should feel great on your feet from the moment you put them on. New Balance needs to get with it and make their shoes the actual size that people are used to. Using different sizes than the rest of the world does nothing but make unhappy customers who have to go through the hassle and sometimes expense to return items just because they size their shoes differently than the rest of the world. Levi Strauss and Carhartt also does this with their pant sizes but that is a different review to be done.

Made in America!
I have used Adidas running shoes for years, however it is time to start rotating new shoes into my collection. I like to have 4 pairs of trail shoes and 2 pairs of road shoes. We have for the past year began to wax patriotic, and there is a need to put Americans back to work. I learned somewhere recently that New Balance make shoes in the good old USA. Went to the New Balance web site to check out their American Made shoes(some of their shoes are made across seas). They are a bit pricey but are competitive with other top of the line shoes. I ordered my new shoes thru Amazon. Just looking at them you could tell these were quality shoes in workmanship, materials and design. Slipped these shoes on and out the door I went. These shoes are the best running shoes I have worn in almost 20 years that I've been running. I like having the tag "Made in the USA" on my shoes while contributing to another Americans paycheck.

The best range of sizes we have found, and made in the U.S.A.!
Pros:+ Available in a huge range of sizes and widths+ Made in the U.S.A.+ Comfortable for a range of activities, from casual wear through walking, hiking, boating, roof maintenance, moderate running, etc.We (spouse and self) have purchased multiple pairs of these, over decades. We both have wide feet. We have had virtually zero success in finding shoes that fit in any stores. Many years ago, though one of us stumbled up on a pair of these in EEEE width. Those widths are still hard to find in stores, but we are happy that we can find them to order on line. Because they fit well, we find ourselves wearing them even for situations where some people may consider them too informal-- just because we can't find more formal-looking shoes that fit.Warning: You do need to expect to replace these every few years, even if you don't wear them a lot. As with every other pair of shoes we have owned that has molded foam soles, the foam on these eventually decomposes and turns to dust. We have observed this with other brands and models, also, including some rather expensive hiking boots of another brand.

Still a fine product, but one little peeve
Doesn't fit me quite as well as the prior 990 series has; but still a damn good, comfortable product, one of the few running shoes available in extra wide. My personal peeve, tho, is that even tho the shoes are still made in the USA, they no longer let you know; the Made in USA logo, once prominent in the rear of the shoes, was much smaller on my last pair, and has now disappeared. What's going on? Some of us want folks to know that we are buying American, and will miss the logo--tho I appreciate that the fact of being made here is more important than advertising the fact, and certainly help keep me buying it, as I have been doing for decades.

Comfortable and True-to-size
I've worn New Balance trainers and walkers for many years. (I still have an ancient pair of 1007's that I wear only in the gym.) I like New Balance because they come in extra wide sizes. The 990's fit pretty much like every other New Balance trainer I've worn, comfortable and true to size. I wouldn't go so far as to call the 990v4 a running shoe as it's heavy and there's not much impact cushioning in the heel. But as a crosstrainer, walker or casual shoe it's exactly what I want. The tongue is sufficiently wide, no hot spots, and heel, toe, instep and arches are all comfortable.A frequent problem I've had with other New Balance models (including my aforementioned 1007's) is that after a few years, the outer sole detaches from the mid-sole. Goop fixes the problem but I'm hopeful these "made in America" 990's hold together until they're completely worn out.
