Impressive Quality

First Impressions. Boot is super light and comfortable. The fit appears narrow. I wear 11.5 my foot is approximate 4” across at widest point, with a medium to high arch. I selected the same size I wear in a sneaker and the fit was perfect.

Waterproofing is a disaster

Salewa states: "Equipped with a waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX® Performance Comfort membrane for weather protection and optimized breathability, " That has not been my experience. My socks were soaked after hiking in occasional light rain for just 2 hours. My feet were quite cold by the time we pulled into camp. I wrung out the socks and used plastic bags as a vapor barrier the next day.All GoreTex wets out after a long time but this is terrible performance. Both hikers with me were wearing GTX boots and neither had problems. One set of those boots was 7 yrs old, not brand new.I expected better from Salewa, especially for this price. Should only be worn in fair weather or at least check the waterproofing before heading out far into the backcountry! There are reviews of the prior model also noting failure of the waterproofing under light conditions, but also several praising it. This could be endemic to this version or simply a manufacturing defect.Another issue is the Y strapping system created pressure points when pulled tight. I do have narrow heels, so getting a proper fit is tough in any boot. The laces come untied easily, so double-knot.On the positive side, traction was good under a variety of conditions though I did not thoroughly test steep wet rock. So, giving it an overall 3 stars as I'm hoping the issue is just a manufacturing defect that Salewa will take care of.Salewa did respond quickly to my review on their website. When I returned from the another backpack I provided the information they requested but have yet to hear a response (5 business days later). I sent a separate email just asking for verification that they even received the information. No response to that either. I will update this if/when there is a resolution.Meanwhile, I will reserve these boots for hikes in dry conditions.--- UPDATE ---Salewa replaced the boots under warranty. It took about a month from my return of the boots which isn't bad as half of that is shipping time.I immediately checked for waterproofing. Stood in a pool of water for 5 minutes, which is as long as I think one could expect from GoreTex. Came out absolutely dry. It might be different when the fabric is moving during actual hiking but for now I have to expect that the problems with the first pair were just a factory mishap. Bumping stars from 3 to 4.

not waterproof

Solid performer, no blisters, but not waterproof. Thought these were supposed to be waterproof, but found out at elevation that they are not. Was a painfully long wet trek.

Love these boots

This is my 4th pair of Salewa boots. This is a newer, updated version and they are even better. After long days of hiking in the Gila NF/Wilderness, my feet may be tired but never a blister or even a hot spot. Well made and a sturdy, comfortable boot.

There is no way these boots will last

The eyelets for the shoelaces on the top of your feet are simply very thin, short pieces of a shoelace. Cinching the laces will rub the "eyelets" all the way through in no time. From there, I guess you could skip an eyelet when you're lacing them up but that would look ridiculous and flat unacceptable. The small plastic eyelets around the ankle area would most likely break from the bootlace rubbing on them even before the "other" style of eyelets I just described.I think these are really nice looking boots and I wanted them to work but I never even put them on after they arrived because of the two design flaws they had.
