GREAT BOOTS and EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE.
This is a fantastic boot. On a hike in New Hampshire the Merrell Moab 3(Gore Tex) soles came off. Seriously, both soles came off. I had used them for several years on various hiking trips in different states and various terrains. I figured that they had lived a good life and it was time to purchase new boots I purchased a new pair (same model with Gore-Tex) and after 3 years they developed a weird bubble (?) under the foot insert, which made it extremely uncomfortable to hike. I gave up on the Moab's and decided to try the Salomon's X Ultra 4. WHAT A GREAT BOOT!!! BIG toe box, and surprisingly light and comfortable. They hardly needed any breaking in at all, if anyl, but I wanted my feet to get used to the boot and to allow for feet expansion. I purchased a model with Gore-Tex, because It's always better to purchase something that has waterproof protection, even if you think you may not need it. I used the boot on a couple of easy hikes, (no more than 2 hour roundtrip) with mild incline with some rocky terrain. The boots were fantastic, they gripped really well and felt excellent coming downhill. The boots protected my ankles really and they did not feel stiff or restrictive. I purchased a 1/2 size bigger than my usual size, because I wanted to allow room for thick wool hiking socks. I didn't encounter much water and was able to easily avoid the small amount of water I did encounter. I will do more hiking in the winter, where I will be trekking through some snowfall, and slush. I will provide updates on the waterproofing at a later date and with more miles on the boots and strenuous hikes. I highly recommend these boots for the comfort, grip, and the generous toe box.

Tough, comfortable, waterproof…My new favorite shoes!
Where do I start? Thanks to Amazon's generous return policy, this was my high-end splurge testing this against another hiking boot brand. I'm familiar with Solomon as I am a skier. Other than comfort, there is not much one can test in a hiking boot so a lot of faith is involved. You know that feeling when you slide your foot into a fleece slipper? I felt pretty much that as far as a hiking boot would go : )Then I wore it walking trails during the summer and fall. Sturdy, good grip, neutral foot temperature surprisingly maintained. Next came hiking in the fall at Illinois State parks such as Starved Rock. While not super high-end hiking, it did rough trails, good inclines and declines, rough and smooth rock, and best of all, water that came up over the laces (up to where I knew the limit of where the boot tongue and the boot were sealed). I felt the cold which worried me but that is all that penetrated. No water leak as promised. It's not to say that you might not get all of this from another hiking boot, but I found this to be everything that I needed. It is not designed for very cold weather though the addition of increasingly warmer socks help. Others may fare better than me as I have Raynaud's and have invested in heated socks.

I thought I was bad at hiking, turns out I just had bad shoes
For three years I tried to make my Keen terradoras work. Every hike my feet would hurt, my toes pinched, and by mile 10 I'm almost in tears. Downhill was a disaster of toe, knee, and hip pain. I thought I was just bad at hiking...Then through a recommendation I got these Salomons, and my life changed.I received them on a friday, was up on a volcano on Monday.I proceeded to do 10 miles a day at the minimum for a week, climbing up and down about 3k feet a day, with ZERO foot pain. Downhill used to be a big problem for me, but I flew down the mountain. These have plenty of toe space and a very solid cushioning so you don't feel any of the uneven ground. As other people mention, they do come a bit narrow in the middle of the foot - I did two 3 mile walks before my big hikes to break them in, and I found that they loosened up a bit. They weren't uncomfortable for me in the first place, but after that they were well fitting. I actually found the middle support comforting and a way to prevent my foot from hitting the toe box.I always wear a normal width shoe, so if you ever tend towards wider shoes, then these could be a problem for you.The goretex - great for stepping into puddles. Not great for a rain downpour, as the tongue of the shoe is not waterproof. I didn't mind the quicklaces - I would have preferred normal laces, but given that the rest of the shoe is so comfortable for me, it's not a hill I'm gonna die on. The quicklaces don't allow you to really tighten the shoe, but I prefer my shoes a bit loose so the fit was fine for me.Overall, so happy I splurged on these and I'm kicking myself for not getting them sooner.

Great hiking boots
Really comfortable hiking shoes, no break-in period necessary. Look great as well. Very happy with the purchase, well worth the money.

Comfortable shoe, sturdy
Loved the shoe but returned as one of the hooks to tighten shoelace was broken when I put it on. Ordered a different pair of Salomon shoes so still love the brand.

Amazingly comfortable but there is a dangerous flaw in the upper lace hooks!!
These are amazing comfortable waterproof hiking boots, however, BEWARE there is a horrible flaw with the upper lace open hooks! The hooks go out too far. I was breaking in my new boots and walking along and one inner lace hook gripped on to the other foots inner lace hook and I couldn't move forward, I just fell down! OMG It was horrible! This is dangerous! OtherwiseI love the boots , they are comfortable and roomy so I will spend more money to take them to the shoemaker tomorrow to see if he can fix them or replace the hooks all together. As I said, these boots are really comfortable but If I am going to hurt myself by a Salomon quality control error/ flaw I unfortunately will have to try to return them...
