Great RACE shoe
Okay...for all of the negative comments about it being uncomfortable for a long distance training shoe, this is NOT a training shoe. This is a race shoe, which means that you wear it off road for 5K XC competition. For that purpose, it is a fantastic shoe. Light as air and good fit. I bought as an upgrade for my middle school daughter mid-season, and she fell in love with them. We are talking middle school, so was running about 6 min/mile XC pace in them. She was already winning her races, but closed the season winning the district & county in these, and had me purchase the next 2 sizes so she is covered for her frosh year where her goal is to be #1 frosh in PA...good to set aggressive goals!

Not for all XC races and racers
I would say this is a minimalist version of a XC spike. The quality is excellent, fit is snug and smart, but Saucony Carrera is more like a 'rubber sock' than a shoe - there is almost no outsole and no protection. While it may still work for some people, I can't imagine racing in it on gravel or any other hard uneven surface.Additional concern: if you have a teenager who's feet are still growing and thus prone to injuries, Saucony Carrera is not the best choice. It offers no support, heel is very soft, entire sole twists too easily in any direction.Although it would be a perfect XC spike for a lightweight adult women racing on grass.We've got Saucony Shay instead.
