Strong chemical off gas

I was excited to get these slippers because they looked so cute and soft. When I opened the package, I was pleased with how they looked and when I tried them on, they fit perfectly. Unfortunately, as soon as I opened the package, the smell was unbearable. The off gas was so strong that it made me cough. I put them outside and they've been outside on my porch for the past 2 weeks and the smell persists. I don't think I can wear these slippers.
