my new go to hiking boots

I can't speak yet about the longevity of these boots (but will update when I can) but out of the box, I love them. They are cute, in a neutral color that goes well with just about everything. The green of the laces is a nice pop of color. The laces are easy to tighten and loosen, with hooks at just the right height so you can unhook and easily remove the boot. They are not "barefoot" hikers but also do not have excessive cushioning or much extending beyond your normal footprint (some of the boots I tried on made my foot look like boats and made me trip because the base was so much bigger than my foot). I have a narrow heel but normal width foot and these are great at holding my heel in place while still giving me room to wiggle my toes. Very little breaking in needed.

Vasque Boots, the Fit, the Legend.

Have been wearing Vasque boots since the late1970's. These have finally moved back to the shape and fit of those first lovely Sundowners with this model. I wish they were in the smooth leather, but boots that fit perfect could be made of anything and I would wear them. These are very waterproof. They are taller than I was used to but with the design and materials they are made of that makes no difference. I put them on and they seem to disappear, they can't be felt, no rubs, yet very supportive. My feet are so happy. They do not get hot in summer, but still keep you comfortable in the winter. Moisture control is key and perfect with my thin to midweight socks. Walking on any surface is as secure as can be reasonably expected. A significant improvement - they DO NOT hold mud like the old Vibram soles did. I bought two colors. Hope they last as long as the previous ones did. I bought my regular size. Go up 1/2 size if you wear thick socks. They come with a fiber (wool?) base removable insole that is very nice. I replace them with a thin cork based insole like my originals had, a personal preference that allows a slight bit more foot volume. A short, like an hour, break in is all it took for them to be ready to take on anything. And that was mostly shoestring adjustment. These are not the heavy backpacking type boot some would need, but for light carry or day hikes and everyday wear these could be your boots.

The Winner After Trying Several

After trying three types, these win. Fit: Exact. Order half size up for thick sox. Toe box ample. Insole hatd so replaced with softer. Soles: best grip and feel ever. These are magic. Breaking In: Finally after 20 miles. Tongue hurt for a bit. Stiff but does provide ankle support. Waterproof: Heck yes. Us: Not heavy, not super light. Good for day hikes and good enough for backpacking with weight bearing. Great grip on all surfaces. Overall: Excellent value for the money and good boots for real outdoors use. Recommend! Would have given all stars if uppers were less stiff.

Amazingly comfortable and easy to break in. Stayed waterproof on a snowy trail. Good ankle support with plenty of toe room. Excellent Vasque boot!

Stiff tongue and requires TOO MUCH breaking in around the ankle collar AND SEE UPDATE ON THESE

UPDATE: I COULD NOT GET THESE TO BREAK IN, NO MATTER WHAT. THE TONGUE IS SO INCREDIBLY TOUGH AND WHILE I LOVE THE HEIGHT, IT JUST DUG INTO MY ANKLES ON BOTH BOOTS TOO MUCH. ONE BOOT FELT OKAY, WHILE THE INSIDE NO CUSHION BACK HEEL KEPT RUBBING AND CAUSING PAIN. I HAD TO STOP AT LEAST 10X ON TRAIL OVER A 3 DAY TRIAL PERIOD AND THEY JUST FELT WORSE AND WORSE. I HAD TO KEEP PUTTING BANDAIDS ON. THE GRIP IS FABULOUS, BUT I’M GOING TO KEEP LOOKING. I didn’t have time to wear them in around the house before a hike. They were delivered at night, and off I went the next morning. Did a two mile small mountain hike, really testing the boulders and rocks. The vibram soles are fabulous. Lots of grip and I loved that. No blisters on feet (I put in my own gel footpad inserts). So the feet were really comfortable. This has a very large and wide toebox (even on regular size) and I loved that. I wear an 8 but got an 8 1/2 due to thick hiking socks and my gel inserts. Perfect size to go up a half. The only con and why not 5 stars, is the tongue is really tough suede! It will take some breaking in. I had to lace them extremely loose. However, the height of this boots is unbelievable! Not one pine needle or debris got inside. Once they wear in, I believe they will be as comfortable as my expensive Lowa’s were. The price on these was right and if they feel really good in a month, I will purchase another to pair to have on hand, as you just can’t get this kind of ankle height on any other hiking boot. Trust me, I’ve tried them all. Great for my ankles and no debris. But beware, these do require a lot of break in. I have thin ankles (7.5” circumference), so if you have thick ankles, I’m thinking these might not be comfortable out of the box. Eventually I hope to tighten up the laces and go all out !! Today was just a test run. I hope they get more comfortable around the ankles each time I go.

So comfortable and supportive - Great Boot!

I tried 18 different hiking boots to find the perfect fit and these are it!!! I have bunions on both feet so very difficult to find the right fit. I purchased these and wore them for the first time on a hiking trip to Bryce Canyon National Park. They were just perfect and so comfortable on my feet. I didn't think I'd find such a comfortable boot but these were just perfect! The photos don't do them justice - the raisin color is really pretty. I highly recommend these hiking boots.

Not comfortable

Heavy, not comfortable. Cuts into my feet even after repeated wears. Good waterproof and good ankle support. But so uncomfortable that I can't wear them even after trying to break them in for an entire season.I prefer my Merrells - they are more expensive but not so much more especially when there are sales. The Merrells might not last as long - these feel very durable if I was able to wear them - but I'll never find out!
